Are Splash Guards or Mud Flaps Worth It?

Whether you drive a compact or mid-size SUV or truck, mud flaps are a simple but essential accessory. They keep dirt and road debris from kicking up and hitting sensitive parts of your vehicle. Splash guards also are a great way to protect the paint and finish of body side panels.

Spring has a lot of us thinking about hikes through muddy fields. Dog-proofing your car on the inside is a great idea. But if it’s muddy enough for this to be your future, it’s hard to wonder:

Are Mud Flaps Worth It?

For starters, mud flaps are the same as splash guards and mud guards. They’re attached behind tires and prevent gravel, water, and mud from splashing up onto your car while driving.

Whether they’re worth it to you depends on your car, where you live, and your driving habits. Here are some of the ways that splash guards help:

  • They protect paint from being chipped or damaged
  • They keep dirt and grime from reaching vulnerable parts of your car
  • They protect pedestrians from being struck by gravel and other road debris
  • They keep your car cleaner, which means fewer trips to the car wash

Of course, cars with large tires or tires with deep treads, typically large SUVs and pickup trucks, are more likely to kick up dirt, which is why truck mud flaps are more common than car splash guards.

Are Splash Guards Worth it or Expensive?

So far as car and truck accessories go, they’re affordable. A set of 4 OEM 2020 Honda Pilot splash guards costs less than $25 per wheel. (Splash guards for older Pilots are the same price.)

Sure, a set of mud flaps and you’ll be as good as new.

At that price, even if they only save you a minor repair for scratched and dinged paint, or a couple trips to the car wash, they’ll have been worth the money. Of course, if you’re on the fence, try asking yourself questions like:

  • Do I drive on gravel or dirt roads?
  • Does my car allow dirt and debris through the fender wells and into the engine and cabin?
  • Do splash guards look good on my vehicle?
  • Is it expensive to repair the paint on my vehicle?
  • Is going to the car wash too expensive or inconvenient?
  • Do I live in a snowy or rainy climate?

A “yes” to any of the above and you can make a strong case that splash guards are worth the investment.
